Except for the hair and sections of the back that would not have been visible, the entire sculpture is gilded. Gold was applied to the bronze sculpture using a technique known as mercury gilding. During the 4th century this highly costly technique was often used for small luxury icons. The entire gilding over this large Buddha made the sculpture one of the most accomplished of that time.
