338 Buddha: An Important Date – Key Players

Two people were primarily responsible for bringing about the creation of this Buddha image: the Jie ruler, Shi Hu (295-349) and his religious and military advisor, the monk Fotudeng (died 348). Fotudeng was part of the wave of Buddhist monks from India who went to China seeking converts. What Fotudeng brought with him to China was a style of Buddhism in which meditation was emphasized.
